Snupit, a trades directory, publishes typical Brackenfell rates on its plumbers page: an hourly rate of up to R400, emergency call-outs of R550 to R1,100, and after-hours work at about 50% more. Those are a directory’s figures for the area, not ours, but they show the three numbers every plumbing invoice is really built from.
The call-out is what it costs to get someone to your door. The hourly rate is what the time costs once they are there. The after-hours loading is what happens to both when the job falls outside working hours. Parts sit on top, and on most small jobs the parts are the smallest line.
Where invoices go wrong is in the gaps between those numbers. Is the first half hour included in the call-out? Is time rounded up to the hour? Does after hours start at five or at six? Does travel to the merchant count as labour? None of those is dishonest in itself, but each one is a surprise if nobody said so first.
So our quotes answer those questions on paper before we start. When something changes on site, work stops, the extra is priced and you agree to it before it is done. The invoice then carries the same lines as the quote, so it can be checked against the quote line by line.
Before you agree to any plumber, ask three questions: what does the call-out include, how is time counted, and when do after-hours rates start. The answers matter more than the headline rate.

Our hourly rate is to be confirmed. Most jobs are fixed-priced instead, so the hourly rate only applies where a job cannot be scoped in advance. A directory lists area rates of up to R400 an hour.
The call-out fee is to be confirmed and covers the visit and diagnosis. Many jobs can be priced from a description and photos before anyone comes out, which costs nothing.
Per-point pricing is common on new installations, where each tap, toilet or appliance connection is a point. We quote new work per point or per run, whichever is clearer for the job, and list each one.
Nights and weekends cost more to staff. We tell you the after-hours rate before we set off, so you can decide whether it can wait until morning.
Work stops and you are told why. The extra is priced in writing and only done once you agree. The original quote does not change without your approval.
Every invoice is itemised: labour, each part, and the cause of the fault in words. That is what insurers usually ask for.
Only if the quote covers the same work. Compare what is included: valves, drip trays, testing, making good. A lower number that leaves out the drip tray is not cheaper.
